Robert Kirk

In this short update Robert will illustrate the main differences between ‘old’ Irish Gaap and FRS 102 by way of practical examples of published accounts from Ireland, North and South, as well a few from Great Britain as well outlining the new FRS 105 on micro companies and FRS 102 Section 1A on small entities which are likely to be introduced into the Republic of Ireland for accounts commencing from the 1st January 2017 onwards.

Robert will briefly discuss the key points arising from the publication and implementation of three new international reporting standards, IFRS 9 Financial Instruments, IFRS 15 Revenue from contracts with customers and IFRS 16 Leasing.

Robert qualified in first place in 1975 as an Irish Chartered Accountant after graduating in Economics from Queens University. He trained in practice with Price Waterhouse and later worked in industry with a subsidiary of Shell (UK).  His teaching career started with Business and Accounting Training (now Griffith College) in Dublin where he taught mainly on the professional examination courses for ICAI, CPA, CIMA and ACCA in Belfast and Dublin.  In 1984 he was appointed a full time lecturer in Queens University and later moved to Ulster University in 1992 as a Senior Lecturer. In 1994 he was appointed to the Chair in Financial Reporting at Ulster.

Robert specialises in the teaching of and research into the development of accounting standards in the United Kingdom. He has published 17 books and numerous articles in both academic and professional journals. His latest publications include two books on FRS 102 – one published by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland and Skillsnet  ‘A New Era for Irish & UK Gaap; A Quick Reference Guide to FRS 102 in April 2013’ (105pp) and one by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland ‘A practical guide to new UK and Irish Gaap in May 2014’ (480pp).



Bernard Walsh is Head of Pensions & Investments at Bank of Ireland Life. This is the life and pensions unit of Bank of Ireland, the country’s largest bancassurer. Bernard previously worked in similar roles for Ulster Bank and worked for Barclays Bank and TSB. A Commerce Graduate of UCC, Bernard has achieved additional qualifications from Coventry University and UCD. He is a regular commentator on personal finance and investment markets in the media. He has a reputation for delivering what can be complex information in a clear and accessible manner. He is also Chairperson of The Care Trust, one of Ireland’s largest charities. In whatever spare time he has, he helps coach 3 GAA teams and a rugby team.

If you have to cancel or transfer, the full fee will be transferred to a future event, provided notice is received not less than 24 hours prior to the event. If you cancel or transfer later than this, the full fee will be charged to that event. Alternatively, a substitute delegate would be welcome at no extra charge.

Where circumstances force the AIA to change the details of or cancel a seminar, the liability of the AIA will be limited to a refund of fees for that particular seminar. The AIA is not liable for any consequential loss.
